In 2020, GeoMedia, the Union for Ethical Biotrade (UEBT) and the Institute for Biodiversity Network (ibn) jointly undertook a research project on how ABS contributes to the Sustainable Development Goals. The project was supported by the German Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, and Nuclear Safety (BMU) and the German Federal Agency for Nature Conservation (BfN).

Informing the ten-year anniversary of the Nagoya Protocol in October 2020
The first project output was an overview (“handout”) of key ABS-related elements in twenty selected cases from around the world. The handout was made available on the occasion of the official UN celebrations for the ten-year anniversary of the Nagoya Protocol in October 2020.
Detailing ABS partnerships
The second output was a compendium, published in April 2021, that examines eleven of the twenty cases in further detail. Each case describes the context in which ABS partnerships were developed, the actors involved, the resources accessed and the process which led to ABS arrangements, as well as lessons learnt and contributions to the SDGs. A summary analysis of key findings from all twenty cases, of lessons learntnd emerging good practices regarding the contribution of ABS to the SDGs completes the compendium.
Both documents have been published on the ABS Clearing House (ABSCH), Virtual Library Resource No. ABSCH-VLR-SCBD-253097-9.
