Products

Consultancy services usually involve deliverables, which can also be considered to be products. However, not all products that I develop with and for my clients are made publicly available. Especially in consulting, the process is often the product itself, without a public product or for internal use only. See selected examples of assignments below.

Drivers of the transition to a circular economy – how countries go circular

On behalf of the EU-funded SWITCH to Green Facility, Susanne documented the Circular Economy transition processes at national level to produce insights on selected country experiences in Africa, Asia and Latin America. Susanne analysed information from conducted interviews with stakeholders including EU Delegations, national governments, the private sector and civil society from Colombia, Ecuador, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, Uganda and Senegal. The brochure identified vision and motivation of actors in the circular economy transition process, the key challenges met, and the milestones set and lessons learnt. The research was conducted by Camilla Shearmen, Ilka Buss (Ecuador) and Anna Urgeghe (Colombia).

Narratives supporting Green Economy around National Parks

Susanne was involved in a study on the Green Economy activities (including ecosystem services) in and around three major protected areas in Eastern Africa, namely the Queen Elizabeth Protected Area (QEPA), Uganda; the Virunga National Park Area (VNP), DRC; and the Northern Rangelands (NRPA), Kenya. In additional to economic analysis, Susanne was contracted to develop communication material to build a narrative illustrating the results of the study. She interviewed entrepreneurs, and NGOS in and around the National Parks. Her work results in factsheets, infographics and story maps highlighting impact of green economy projects on people around the parks. Susanne was contracted by Living Prospects.

Green practices supporting the circular economy transition

With the publication „Supporting the Circular Economy” Susanne takes the reader on a journey across selected economic sectors, with a view to inspiring and encouraging a switch to green, notably circular, practices. She researched facts and figures on the environmental impact of economic activities, and explains the challenges faced in each sector. She complemented each section with stories from the field, showcasing successful green economy projects with strong replication potential. The publication benefits from strong illustrations and infographics produced by Paula Molina from Ecovantis.

Sharing the benefits of biodiversity

Susanne and colleagues crafted a compendium focusing on partnerships on Access and benefit Sharing (ABS) cases in the frame of the Nagoya Protocol. The case studies detail contextual development, actors, resources, and processes. Each case includes insights, lessons learned, and contributions to SDGs. A summary analysis of all twenty cases distills key findings, lessons, and emerging practices, providing a comprehensive overview of ABS contributions to sustainable development goals. The research was conducted together with colleagues from GeoMedia, the Union for Ethical Biotrade (UEBT) and the Institute for Biodiversity Network. Susanne was contract by GeoMedia.

Researching the recipe for replication

At their best, development programmes contain ‘leverage points’ where a relatively small effort can produce a significant leap in the replication of the effort invested. Susanne was involved in a research of this leverage points across the EU-funded SWITCH-Asia programme. With project visits, interviews, and desk research, she investigated the mechanism around policy engagement and access to finance. Susanne played a pivotal role in distilling invaluable lessons from the EU programme, weaving together comprehensive reports that encapsulates key insights and lesson on replication mechanisms.
The research was conducted in the frame of the SWITCH-Asia Network Facility. Susanne was contracted by CSCP.

Strategy and process advisory

In 2020, Susanne facilitated the process to draft a new gender and feminist strategy for the Heinrich-Boell Foundation. The strategy paper “Compass for Gender Democracy and Feminism” provides direction for our future international feminist work: It sets out our vision of gender democracy and embeds the Foundation’s work in global developments in gender relations. Gender policy work has lost none of its urgency. In a series of interactive workshops, Susanne guided the Boell team to define goals, tasks, responsibilities and competences.
